AUSTRALIA’S DROUGHT THROUGH THE LENS

Admin2018-09-06T04:05:22+00:00

When the rain stopped in Australia, 16-year-old Zara King began to take pictures of the destruction of her family livestock farm.

The worst drought in living memory is sweeping parts of eastern Australia, leaving farmers struggling to cope and asking questions about their future.

According to ABC Rural, rainfall was below average, particularly in New South Wales, where it was the eighth-driest winter on record and the driest since 2002. Almost 60% of Queensland needs more rain. And NSW is worse. 99% of the state is experiencing drought conditions. In the shorter term, the spring outlook is not suggesting there is relief in sight for either rainfall or temperatures over the next few months.

Captured by 16-year old farmer’s daughter

The drought has been captured through the lens by 16-year-old Zara King, who documented the destruction of her family’s sheep and cattle farm in Tullibigeal in rural New South Wales. Zara was 11 when she was given her first camera. An iPhone 3. She’s since upgraded to a Canon and a drone. The money Zara is earning with the pictures will be going to drought charities in her country. These charities and go fund me pages will go towards helping Aussie Farmers in need right now.

If you wish to make a donation, you can do so through following charities:

  • Drought Angels
  • Buy a Bale
  • Need for Feed
  • Go Fund me Central West Farmers
  • Go Fund me Help Aussie Farmers
